Based on 2,028 reviewsCho Sun Ok Restaurant is widely praised for its authentic Korean barbecue experience, offering high-quality meats and flavorful banchan that consistently impress diners. The restaurant’s cozy atmosphere and attentive, hands-on service from the staff, often involving direct assistance with grilling, enhance the welcoming and communal dining environment. While the space is intimate and sometimes compact, it adds to the charm and authenticity that patrons appreciate. Some feedback notes variability in service attentiveness, but overall, the restaurant is celebrated for its genuine flavors, reasonable pricing, and maintaining a strong reputation over the years. Cho Sun Ok is regarded as a top choice for those seeking an authentic and satisfying Korean BBQ meal in Chicago.
I’m really happy I finally made it to Cho Sun Ok. The food was delicious and the service was excellent. The ajummas helped prepare the meat and took great care of us throughout the meal. As someone who’s half Korean, the experience felt especially heartwarming and full of camaraderie. The banchan was flavorful, the meat was great quality, and everything was reasonably priced. I highly recommend it and can’t wait to go back.
Although the service is a 0/5 (the ajuhma’s here don’t gaf), the food is a 5/5 hahaha The inside isn’t very spacious but my friend and I were able to get seated right away. We were originally going to order some cold noodles but since they ran out, we ended up getting the Beef SunDuBu JiGae and the Galbi. The banchan here is fantastic- every dish tasted so fresh and delicious. The sudubu was very savory and flavorful, it’s one of the best ones I’ve had in a while. As for the Galbi, the cut of meat is thicker than all the Korean restaurants I’ve ever been to but it’s also one of the best one’s I’ve had. Super tender and juicy- I still think about it from time to time haha. That being said, if you are expecting good customer service (even just OK/mid), this is not the place. Cho Sun Ok is strictly to just eat good Korean food and leave when you’re done. Note: The restaurant says it closes at 9:30 and let me tell you, the ajuhmas and cooks are wiping down tables and putting up chairs by 9:20 so if you’re coming in 30 minutes before closing, I’m wishing you the best of luck
What an amazing experience I had. The food was amazing. I order the intestine dish, and it blew me away. Although the restaurant is small, it is very cozy. I definitely felt like I got to experience an authentic Korean meal. The staff were very attentive. Even though they had a full house, they kept checking on us and helping us throughout the meal. I would love to come here again.
This is a top notch Korean BBQ establishment!! This review is five years late as I just started doing reviews recently… but I had to post about this place! Ive been to many Korean BBQ spots around the country, some that are all you can eat, some that try too look like they’re in a K-pop video and others that attempt to look fancy but have little to offer that’s good, this restaurant maybe a hole in the wall compared to most places that I’ve been but the food and service are absolutely AMAZING!! The meats were excellent, I had bulgogi which was the best that I’ve had, my friend had other meats which they also really enjoyed. The other great thing were the side offering, there were many and all very good! I 100% recommend trying this place out if you are looking for excellent Korean BBQ and in the Chicago area definitely try out Cho Sun Ok!!!
The best Korean BBQ in Chicago. I went back after 9 years, and it still tasted just as good. We had the chadolbaegi, and the quality was amazing. The employees even came over to grill it for us. The fried rice was delicious too. I’ll definitely return the next time I visit Chicago.
BEST Korean spot in the city to me and all my Korean friends here- closest kbbq flavors and dipping sauces to Seoul. Too many reviews complain about service. It was packed when I was there, but the servers go around and cut the meat, fry the rice, etc. If you're used to small talk and smiles with your servers you might not like it, but this is very typical for a busy Asian restaurant imo. They don't rush you out, they're just rushing around themselves. If you want authentic, this is it.
I brought my aunt, who has lived in Chicago for 50 years, here. She was very surprised by how authentic the Korean food at this restaurant is. The restaurant’s atmosphere feels like stepping into Korea itself — like sitting down to eat a home-cooked meal made by a kind auntie. But you also have to accept that the service may be a bit difficult, as communication can be a challenge at times.
This is a true neighborhood treasure. There's a line here for a reason. The dishes are all authentic and freshly prepared. Love the table-grilled meat, especially. Service is very prompt. Best to BYO and know ahead of time what you'll order as the menu is extensive. Highly recommend.
